THE game of the day on Saturday in the West Cheshire League Pyke Cup second round could be found at Newton, where the home side edged a 7-goal thriller with a narrow 4-3 victory over visiting Upton AA.

Goals from Anthony Brown, Jamie Hannah, Jon-Paul Stanthorpe and Kieron Fleetwood proved to be just enough to guide the hosts through to the the last four despite goals from Upton’s Simon Andrew, Steve Finlay and Steve McGowan.

Title-chasing Maghull also secured their place in the semi-final of the competition with a 3-0 home win over relegation-threatened Christleton, courtesy of goals from Brad Smart, Ryan Stamper and Tom Foley.

Willaston were the third team to book their place in the semi-final, as they managed a surprise 3-1 win at Southport Trinity. On target for the away side were Oliver Stearman, James Jones and Josh Williams, with Kevin Kirkpatrick scoring the hosts only goal.

The results have set up a semi-final clash between Newton and Willaston, while Maghull await either Ellesmere Port or Heswall.

The only game in Division One saw Blacon Youth Club slip to a 2-0 home defeat to Helsby, with goals from Lewis Buckley and Mike Whithead.

In Division Two, AFC Bebington were held 0-0 at home by Capenhurst Villa.
