A LONG-SERVING former player, manager and chairman of Upton AA has passed away.
Geoff Gornall died peacefully at the Countess of Chester on Saturday, December 15. He was 62.
Mr Gornall joined Upton as a 15-year-old player in 1965.
During the next 35 years, he became a real driving force behind the club.
He was instrumental in Upton’s move from their pitch at Wealstone Lane to their current base at the Cheshire County Sports Club in Upton.
His time at the club saw them rise from the Chester & District League to the West Cheshire League, where Upton still play.
Mr Gornall was also responsible for recruiting former professional players like Bob Delgado and John Butcher.
His involvement in the club ended in 2000 due to ill health.
Current Upton AA chairman Peter Upton said: “Geoff will be greatly missed.”
Mr Gornall, who lived near Upton-by-Chester Golf Club, was a former MD of Cheshire Wholefoods, based on the old Sealand Industrial Park.
The funeral will take place at Blacon Crematorium at midday on Friday, January 4.
Family and friends will then gather for refreshments at the Cheshire County Sports Club, on Plas Newton Lane.
