Gainsborough Trinity 2 Vauxhall Motors 1

MOTORS can still achieve their highest ever league placing – and they can still beat the 54 points total they collected in finishing 11th in 2008-09.

But they will have to do it the hard way by beating Blue Square Bet North high-flyers Harrogate Town in their final home match of the season this Saturday (3pm), after going down at Gainsborough Trinity last weekend.

It was a typical end-of-season clash at The Northolme, with goalmouth action in short supply.

The home side took the lead on 37 minutes following a mix-up in the Motors’ defence. Keeper Zac Jones rushed off his line to clear a dangerous through ball, but his half clearance fell to Jonathan Williams who crossed from the left and Simon Russell bundled the ball into an empty net.

Trinity doubled their advantage on 51 minutes when a Josh Wilde cross from the left was met by former Chester City striker Darryn Stamp who had time to calmly volley home from close range.

Motors, to their credit, continued to plug away and grabbed a consolation deep into added time through substitute Obi Anoruo.
