VAUXHALL Motors have snapped up former Liverpool youngster Karl Clair.

The 19-year-old forward was once one of the Anfield club’s brightest prospects, but his progress was hampered by a serious knee injury.

He played in the 2009 FA Youth Cup final but was released last year.

Clair has spent the last 12 moths at Loughborough University with the Nike Academy, which helps promising unsigned players find clubs.

Carl Macauley’s Motors side are currently 13th in the Blue Square Bet North table following Saturday’s 2-1 home win over Hinckley United.

Although the Motormen controlled the first hour of the game, the Knitters mounted a late charge and brought the best out of home goalkeeper Zac Jones.

Just two minutes after half-time, Motors took a deserved lead when Steve Wainwright picked out Carl Rutter, who cleverly scooped a shot into the top corner.

The goal of the game was scored by Dan Parkinson on 56 minutes when he beat the offside trap, then cut inside and skipped past a couple of challenges before rifling the ball into the roof of the net.

Danny Newton scrambled the ball home to make it 2-1 – but that was how it stayed.

Vauxhall kick-off their FA Cup campaign this Saturday.

They go to Stalybridge Celtic for a second qualifying round tie (3pm).
