A MAJOR fundraising effort has made it possible for a junior football team to take part in a top tournament on the continent.
Chester and District Junior Football League side Saughall Colts under-9s will travel to Amsterdam in Holland on Easter weekend to take part in the Easter Cup 2013 – Europe’s largest junior tournament.
Saughall will take a squad of 11 players for the seven-a-side games, with 10 parents accompanying them.
The club needed £4,000 to pay for the trip and so set about a series of events to help generate the cash.
Bag packing at local supermarkets, a sponsored dance and a donation from Sports Direct in Liverpool raised funds but a charity auction and entertainment night at Mollington Village Hall took Saughall to their target. The club ended the evening with an impressive £3,000 which then allowed them to book flights to Amsterdam.
The players and parents will set off on Good Friday and pay a visit to the home of Ajax Football Club. Saughall will then travel to CenterParcs at Zandvoort, the team’s base, and will return home on Easter Sunday.
Team coach Paul Hitchcox said: “It is really satisfying that we have achieved our goal of raising the funds to send 11 players and 10 parents to Holland over the Easter weekend to what will be an amazing experience for the players and the parents.”
