PHIL JAGIELKA’S Euro 2012 dream has been dramatically resurrected after the Everton defender was drafted into the full England squad to replace the injured Gareth Barry.

New Three Lions boss Roy Hodgson opted to call-up the 29-year-old Blues’ vice captain, after receiving confirmation that Barry was ruled out with an abdominal tear.

It is believed that Jagielka’s impressive performance in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Norway convinced the new England boss to add him to his defensive ranks, instead of including another midfielder.

The news was confirmed by the Football Association yesterday, meaning Jagielka becomes Everton’s fifth player to travel to the tournament in Ukraine and Poland next month.

Only 12 days ago it seemed as if the Toffees centre half would be disappointed, after he was only included on the stand-by list of players.

Club team-mates Sylvain Distin and Leighton Baines both expressed their surprise at his exclusion, while manager David Moyes also admitted he was disappointed, but Jagielka never gave up hope - and his professional attitude at Wembley on Saturday boosted his chances.

“I am very disappointed to lose Gareth, not only was he a member of my original 23-man squad but he has featured prominently in the England team over the last few years,” said manager Roy Hodgson, after the announcement.

“I know how much he wanted to be part of the tournament but I’m sure he will still have a part to play with England after the Euros.

“I wish him a speedy recovery.”

Jagielka had already been tipped to come in and strengthen Hodgson’s defensive options before Barry’s fate was confirmed.

The Everton man’s part, alongside Joleon Lescott, in a defence which shut-out World Champions Spain in November was also noted in his late selection.

He will hope to add to his 11 caps when their tournament begins with a Group D opener against France in Donetsk on June 11.

Blues skipper Phil Neville was among the first to publicly congratulate his team mate when he tweeted, 'Well done and well deserved call up to the squad to Phil jagielka he was outstanding on Saturday!!'
