Everton 0 Liverpool 2

GOALS from Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez gave Liverpool a 2-0 victory against ten-man Everton at Goodison Park in the 216th Merseyside derby,

Both sides made just one change from their last Premier League outing. For Everton Louis Saha was recalled in place of club captain Phil Neville, with Dirk Kuyt in for Jordan Henderson for Kenny Dalglish's side, who had their own skipper, Steven Gerrard, among the substitutes.

Marouane Fellani, restored to midfield after his attacking stint at Manchester City last weekend, had the game's first meaningful effort in the third minute, with his 20-yard strike deflected wide of Pepe Reina's near post.

An error from Phil Jagielka gifted Liverpool their first chance five minutes later, but Suarez headed tamely at Tim Howard from Dirk Kuyt's astute cross.

Moments later, it was Reina called into action as Tim Cahill got above Jamie Carragher to meet Seamus Coleman's diagonal ball. The Spanish 'keeper did well to turn his header over the crossbar, and saw Sylvain Distin fire an angled strike over the bar soon after.

Saha was next to try his luck, fizzing a 25-yard drive just wide of Reina's right-hand upright. But a relatively-quiet affair exploded into life after 22 minutes when Jack Rodwell was shown a straight-red card for a challenge on Suarez. Replays showed the 20-year-old's studs were showing, but that he had taken a huge slice of the ball, with Evertonians – and Rodwell – incensed.

Suarez fired into the side-netting as Liverpool, as expected, bossed possession before the break, without looking overly-threatening.

But as the sides prepared for the interval, Jagielka crashed into Suarez in the penalty area, and Atkinson pointed to the spot. Kuyt, looking for his 6th derby goal, shot low to Howard's left, but the American got down to push the ball round the post.

Still there was time for another let off for the home side before the break, as Adam's arrowed effort from the corner of the penalty area in stoppage time crashed against the underside of the crossbar with Howard beaten.

It was the ten-men who started the second-half the more promising, with Saha sweeping Cahill's pass wide from the edge of the area.

Liverpool responded instantly, with Carroll's header from an Adam corner cleared off the line by Distin. Another leap from the £35m man forced Howard into a scrambling save soon after, while Jagielka was forced to clear Martin Kelly's cross from beneath his own crossbar as the visitors threatened.

Kuyt failed to steer Adam's quick free-kick on target soon after, while David Moyes responded by sending on Royston Drenthe for Seamus Coleman.

Saha, forced to plough a lone furrow up front, fizzed a 30-yarder inches wide of Reina's right—hand post as Everton threatened sporadically.

Chasing the win, Kenny Dalglish sent on Gerrard and Craig Bellamy for Adam and Downing, whilst Moyes brought on the more defensive-minded Neville for Leon Osman.

And it was Liverpool's changes that had the desired effect on 71 minutes. Bellamy ran at the retreating Tony Hibbert down the left and played in Jose Enrique on the overlap. The Spaniard dug out a cross from the by-line which Kuyt dummied for Carroll to sweep home from 10 yards for his first league goal since April.

And ten minutes later, the game was up. Suarez's run into the area caused panic in the Blues' defence, forcing Distin into a hurried clearance which presented the Uruguayan with a chance that he converted left-footed from 8 yards.

Gerrard came close to a third, with his 20-yard curler deflected wide late on, while Kuyt hit the inside of Howard's post in stoppage time after Suarez's quick corner, as Liverpool comfortably saw out the final few minutes.
