Chester FC did not do enough to deserve more than a point following Monday's 1-1 draw with Guiseley AFC, according to manager Steve Burr.

The Blues failed to shine on a wet August bank holiday at the Lookers Vauxhall Stadium where Lions keeper Steven Drench was a spectator for the most part.

John Rooney's second-half penalty put the hosts into an undeserved lead on 65 minutes, however the visitors drew level through substitute Adam Boyes with six minutes remaining and had chances to grab a winner.

Burr said afterwards: "It was disappointing really. We just didn't flow at all and it's disappointing because we were looking for maximum points.

"Guiseley proved a tough nut to break down and obviously came with a game plan but I thought they knocked it about quite well

"It was a game really where we never quite did enough to deserve to win it I didn't think."

Burr was without injured duo Ross Hannah and Luke George, and suffered a further blow in the 23rd minute when Craig Hobson had to be replaced having gone over on his ankle in the warm-up.

Chester's stuttering attack meant the Lions, promoted from the National League North at the end of last season, had an easier than expected afternoon.

Burr agreed with the post-match assessment his side's performance was 'flat'.

He said: "It was and it was a very sort of quiet atmosphere. I said to the lads 'look, you can't expect the crowd to lift you all the time'. We've got to give them something to knock them into gear to get behind us.

"You know what it's like, you start off well in the season and expectations go high, which is great and the lads were turning up expecting to get three points and I'm sure all of our fans were expecting us to get three points but it just sometimes doesn't happen like that.

"We've had a good start and we didn't lose the game, which is pleasing. We had one or two influential lads out. We lost Hobby who sort of rolled his ankle in the warm-up and we're missing Ross Hannah.

"It was an opportunity for one or two others to go in but I just felt that in that final third we didn't really excite or create anything and I don't think Drench had a save to make actually."

Guiseley protested at the handball decision which resulted in Rooney opening the scoring from the spot, but Burr felt the Blues should have been awarded another penalty when Kane Richards was brought down in the box.

Burr said: "For the penalty I think the lad's gone to clear it and it's rolled up and hit his arm but we're a bit bemused by the other one when Kane went through and he went down because I wouldn't have thought for one minute he'd dive there.

"We got that break where we got the penalty and to be honest once we'd scored we had a little spell where it kicked us into gear but it just went flat again."

Boyes, who had a short spell on loan at Kidderminster Harriers when Burr was in charge, earned the Yorkshire visitors a share of the spoils with a close range finish late on.

Although disappointed at not building on Saturday's 2-1 win at Macclesfield Town, Burr was pleased not to lose ahead of a imposing home game with unbeaten leaders Forest Green Rovers on Saturday (3pm).

Burr said: "I've had Adam before and he's come off the bench and done his job as a striker and got them a point

"We just feel like it's two points dropped but in saying that as well we haven't played well and we haven't lost the game."
