Chester FC boss Steve Burr has confirmed he’s still working on a deal for Dale Tonge and believes the trialist defender would be a ‘great addition’ to the club.

The 30-year-old defender has spent the past four weeks with the Blues and has been an ever-present during pre-season, producing another solid performance in the 4-1 win at Stalybridge Celtic on Saturday .

Tonge’s experience and ability to cover a number of positions would be welcome, but the deal now depends on how much room remains in the manager’s budget.

Chester expect to receive a fee for England C midfielder Kingsley James, who moved to FC Halifax Town having turned down a new contract , but will not know how much until a tribunal has been completed.

Burr said: "I would like to bring Dale in. He would be a great addition to the squad and he’s done very well for us in pre-season

"We’re in a situation where we’re trying to see how we make it happen, if we can. It’s not just about Kingsley James, but if that situation was resolved then obviously we would know where we are

"Dale’s stuck around with us since the start of pre-season and I’m sure the supporters have seen how well he has done. We are doing everything we can to get something sorted with him and it’s not for the want of trying on our part."

Barnsley-born Tonge began his career with his hometown club and made more than 50 appearances for the Tykes before moving to Rotherham United, where he spent five seasons.

Tonge switched to Torquay United in summer 2013 and featured 56 times before leaving Plainmoor at the end of last season.
