PRIOR to Tuesday, the last Liverpool player to score a home Merseyside derby hat-trick was Fred Howe.

The Cheshire-born forward played for Liverpool in the mid-to-late 1930s having joined as a 22-year-old from Hyde United in March 1935. His moment of fame came on the afternoon of Saturday, September 7, that year.

Just a fortnight or so before his 23rd birthday, Howe netted four times as George Patterson’s Liverpool thrashed Everton 6-0 at Anfield in a First Division match in front of 46,082.

His first goal (“a gliding header” according to the Football ECHO report) came after 15 minutes and after a brace from Gordon Hodgson, Howe netted on 42 minutes (a drive past Ted Sagar), 86 minutes (a header after a Sagar save) and 89 minutes (another header “at express speed”) to complete what it still the club’s biggest victory over their city rivals.

Howe was Liverpool’s leading marksman for the next two seasons, and in total made 94 appearances netting 36 goals.

He left the club in the summer of 1938.
