STEVE Davis is sweating on the fitness of a trio of top players in the build-up to Saturday's FA Vase Final.

Striker Danny Griggs and midfielders Phil Parkinson and Stuart Scheuber are all doubts for the biggest game in the club's history, against Hillingdon Borough at Birmingham City's St Andrews (3pm).

Griggs needed several stitches in his head after a horrific clash with a concrete post in the midweek draw with Congleton, while captain Parkinson (ankle) and Scheuber (thigh) also picked up knocks.

All three will have to prove their fitness over the next two days.

Player-boss Davis said: 'We are still hopeful they will be fit, and we will give them every chance because they deserve to be there.'

Davis has the option of bringing in experienced former professionals Martin O'Connor and Andy Porter if needed, but he insists he will stick with the youngsters who got the club to the showcase final.

Now he is gearing up for a tough test against Hillingdon, of the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division, who have gone more than 20 games un-beaten.

He said: 'I've watched them and they are a decent side with good players. We are two form teams going into it with confidence. It should be a good, attractive final.

'But I think if we play to our potential we can win the game. The players won't shy away from the challenge. I'm looking forward to it, and feel relaxed and quietly confident.'

Crewe Alex boss Dario Gradi has paid tribute to Nantwich's achievement, saying: 'It's terrific for them. I have to work, but otherwise I'd love to be at the final. We work closely with Nantwich and I wish them all the best.'
