CREWE FC capped a fine season with a double delight.

After completing the Mid-Cheshire League season in sixth spot, they added two trophies to their honours list by successfully retaining the Crewe and District FA Cup and the Roger Haydock Trophy.

Yet as manager Ian O'Reilly was quick to admit, Saturday's defeat of Nantwich Town Reserves in the Crewe and District FA showpiece was barely deserved.

Crewe triumphed 4-3 in a penalty shoot-out after the game had ended 1-1 after extra-time.

'We started well and edged the first half. Dave Hanson scored in the 20th minute and then Dave and Steve Parker hit the woodwork.

'But after the break, Nantwich battered us. They fielded a good, young side and, to be fair, it was always just a matter of time before they scored.'

After Darren Vickers made an important goalline clearance, the Dabbers eventually grabbed a deserved equaliser in the last minute to send the game into extra-time.

Nantwich missed the target with two spot-kicks, allowing Vickers to net the winning kick and help Crewe retain the cup.

'We were disappointed with the team's performance really and during extra-time, I'd have taken our luck with the penalties. I think Nantwich deserved better than they got, but we're not complaining. If there's ever a game to win when you don't deserve to, it's a cup final.'

Crewe's defence of the Roger Hay-dock Trophy was more comfortable.

A Gary Wood hat-trick helped them to a 3-0 win over Loppington in last Tuesday's semi-final and Crewe romped to a 6-0 defeat of Whitchurch Alport Reserves in Sunday's final.

Dave Hanson and Martin Chesters both scored twice with Gary Gordon and Steve Parker also on target.

O'Reilly said: 'It has been a good end to the season and I am just hoping to add a couple of new faces to the squad for next season. If we make a good start, then I see no reason why we cannot go on from here.' Crewe FC hold their annual presentation night this weekend.
