THE League had a two-thirds success rate in the opening round of the Crewe and District/East Cheshire Inter-League Cup on Saturday.

Four of the six Crewe and District League sides in action booked their place in the second round of the competition.

Bentley had to find top gear to earn their place in the hat after being pushed all the way by Old Alts Vets.

The teams were locked at 4-4 after 90 minutes and finished 5-5 after extra-time. The Motormen eventually went through 6-5 after an equally tense penalty shoot-out.

Craig Griggs scored twice and Pete Griffiths, Ian Martin and Richard Prince once in open play with Martin netting the all-important penalty.

Sandbach secured a 3-1 win over Astra Zeneca thanks to goals from Paul Burns, Jamie Cowden and Andy Socha, while double strikes from Eddie Pollard and Ian Slinger, together with a Tim Allen goal gave Congleton Athletic a 5-2 win over Poynton Nomads.

Winnington Reserves had six different scorers in their 6-3 win at Wilmslow Athletic with Ray Dalton, Mark Baiton, Gary Nelson, Matty Bestell, Martin Yoxall and Steve Pickett all finding the net.

Neighbours Winnington Avenue did not enjoy such success as they went down 3-0 to Bollington, while Winsford IPC crashed 5-2 to Poynton RBL after extra-time after the teams had been locked at 2-2 after 90 minutes. Derek Harrison and Craig Almond were the Winsford marksmen.

The ties involving Bunbury and Malpas were both called off due to waterlogged pitches.
