Chester FC forward Craig Hobson hopes to tie up a new contract but acknowledges he needs to become more consistent.

Hobson has shown - most notably in the FA Cup win at Southend United - flashes of his best form, although his performances have fluctuated through the season.

He lost his place in January and started just once in three months before making a scoring return to the side in the 3-1 defeat of Dover Athletic.

His current deal runs out at the end of the campaign and the 27-year-old has held talks with Steve Burr about his future.

Although he admits Hobson can be frustrating, the manager knows the Bolton-born frontman well and believes he gives him good value.

Hobson, who has scored seven times in the league, would like to remain at the Swansway Chester Stadium and work on improving his game.

"I've spoke to the gaffer and he's said he'd like to keep me and I'd like to stay so we'll just see what happens," said Hobson.

"In some games this season I've done well and in other ones I've been a bit indifferent.

"With me personally, I know it's consistency so hopefully I will just try and keep on top of that and find it out what it is.

"It could be in the head but I honestly don't know and it's just one of those things that I've got to keep trying to narrow down and do what I can.

"As a striker you always want to score more goals but I think there's some games where I look back and think I've done well and then others where I look back and think no not really that's not for me.

"I think it's just one of them where there's been ups and downs but it's like that in every season.

"I think a lot of it with me comes down to confidence and obviously when you're playing and scoring the confidence comes and everyone sees it."

Hobson, who signed from Guiseley in March 2014, was part of the squad relegated on the final afternoon of last season, later overturned when Hereford United were expelled from the Football Conference.

The current campaign has been one of progress and this time the season draws to a close with the Blues still in the hunt for a top half finish.

Hobson, who has helped the Blues pick up six points from the past two games, thinks that would be an excellent acheivement.

He said: "It would be nice, of course it would, especially with what happened last year and the atmosphere and feel about the place is totally different this year."
