On the back of an encouraging first season and with a new manager at the helm, Chester FC Women have high hopes the 2016/17 campaign will be one to remember.

Launched 12 months ago with backing from Chester FC Community Trust and club sponsors MBNA, the Blues entered the Cheshire Women's League and achieved a fourth-place finish under the guidance of Richard Smith.

Performances and results improved dramatically over the season and although Smith stepped down as manager in May, his former assistant Dean Vian has now taken the reins with preparations for the new term well underway.

Vian told The Chronicle he believes the team are capable of challenging the league's top sides and he is keen to strengthen his squad for an assault on the title.

The Blues train twice a week and with access to excellent facilities, full kit provided and a growing band of supporters as interest in women's football continues to rise, Vian believes the club has a lot to offer potential recruits.

"We had a great first year and in the second half of the season we had some very good results and beat some good teams," said Vian.

"We were 2-0 up against Runcorn Linnets who ended up winning the league and cup double and if it wasn't for injuries and a little bit of bad luck I think we'd have beaten them.

"We've got a very young side which is good because they are very eager to learn and develop but I do think we could do with a little bit more experience to help us be a bit more streetwise.

"There are a couple of new players who have already come in but we'd certainly like to add a couple more. The aim for this season is to challenge for the title and I think after last season that's not unrealistic.

"It's a very good environment to play in. I'm working towards the UEFA B Licence and we've got experienced coaches who put a great deal of time and planning into our training sessions.

"We've got our playing philosophy and we do a lot on the tactical side and fitness work, and we're all looking forward to the new season."
