Steve Burr will adopt a safety-first approach to tonight's match with Wolverhampton Wanderers' development squad (7.45pm).

With the first game of the 2014-15 season in four days, the manager does not want to run the risk of any of his key men being injured.

Chris Iwelumo (ankle) and Michael Kay (knee) are nursing knocks and with a small squad the Blues cannot afford to take chances.

Burr has been inundated with requests from agents and could look to give a number of trialists a chance to impress tonight.

"The main thing about the Wolves game is that we don't pick up any injuries," he said.

"We'll give lads some game time again but fingers crossed we don't want to pick up any injuries before Saturday."

Burr plans to hand starts to teenagers Liam Blake and Tom Peers and will look to rotate the rest of his squad, although the likes of Matty Brown, Kingsley James and John Rooney could have minimal involvement.

Craig Hobson has been struggling with a nasty grassburn but should be fine, and Danny Harrison might get another run-out after an impressive performance in the 3-1 win at Stafford Rangers on Saturday.

Wolves kick-off the new season at home to Norwich this weekend but the Championship club are sending a strong squad to the Swansway Chester Stadium.

Ex-Premier League regulars Kevin Doyle, Jamie O'Hara, Stephen Ward and Kevin Foley will all be involved.

David Davis, Tongo Doumbia and Ethan Ebanks-Landell all have first team experience, teenage starlet Eusébio Bancessi has been tipped for big things and ex-Wrexham winger Bradley Reid will feature too.

Burr expects a tough test and will be on a scouting mission too with the potential to bring in one or two loanees from Molineux this season.

He said: "They've just got promoted and they'll be lads in that squad at Wolves that will be pushing to put thoughts in Kenny Jackett's head

"It also gives us chance maybe further down the line during the season to have a look at one or two of the Wolves players and I know that we'd get help from them with  loans and stuff like that

"I'm looking forward to it and I think for the lads and everybody and myself Saturday can't come quick enough now."

Admission for tonight's game is £5 for adults and free for juniors.
