The midweek fightback can be the platform Chester FC need to put a run together and start climbing the table, says Steve Burr.

But the manager has warned the visit of FC Halifax Town this Saturday (3pm) should not be viewed as a ‘gimme’ despite them conceding 20 goals in their past five games.

Burr’s team were heading for a third defeat in a row at Southport on Tuesday night but turned it around through late goals from Michael Kay and Craig Mahon.

And with James Roberts and Luke George in line to return this weekend, some of the gloom that has enveloped the Lookers Vauxhall Stadium of late could be starting to lift.

However, Chester must be wary of a backlash from a Halifax side walloped 7-0 at Grimsby Town last time out, the second time the Shaymen have conceded seven in four games under new manager Darren Kelly, whose assistant is ex-Chester City boss Jim Harvey.

Burr insists his sole focus on Saturday will be securing three points and seeing further signs of progress from a squad that has not lived up to expectations.

He said: "We’ve just got to go and get three points. It’s probably the worst time to play a side after they’ve been battered like that but I’m more interested in my team and how we perform.

"At the minute we’re not firing on all cylinders. There’s little patches where we’ve done OK, we showed a bit of spirit on Tuesday to win the game but we’re still not firing, but as I say we have been missing one or two and hopefully on Saturday we’ll have everybody back and we can build on that.

"All round we have to do better but we’ve had a little tricky spell with one or two lads missing but there’s a bit of light at the end of the tunnel with the injuries and we’re getting lads back so hopefully this can give us a bit of a platform to kick on."

Burr confirmed a loan deal lined up for last week fell through but with Mahon, George and on-loan forward Roberts back in the fold, he does not expect much movement this week.

He said: "I enquired about a lad last week that I thought I’d got for the Lincoln game but that wasn’t to be so that was a bit disappointing

"We’ll keep looking and if there is a chance then we might look to bring somebody in but with those lads back it will be like having new players.

"We saw that with Craig on Tuesday who I though did great. I know how much he’s been missing being involved and he gave us that spark.

"We’re pleased to have him back and hopefully Luke George will be back for Saturday if we can get a good training session into him."
