Steve Burr has injury concerns over Chris Iwelumo, Matty Brown and Michael Kay heading into the season opener with Barnet.

All three sat out the midweek loss to a strong Wolves development side, but are hoping to be involved in an open training session on Thursday afternoon.

Centre forward Iwelumo had a fitness test on his ankle before the 4-1 defeat on Tuesday and the 36-year-old remains an outside chance for the weekend.

Kay has been sidelined with a knee problem and losing both him and Brown would leave the Blues short in defence.

But a stomach bug that swept through the squad earlier in the week has now subsided.

Burr said: "The illness seems to be over the worst now, but I can vouch for that because I had it myself so I don't know what they're putting in the sandwiches at Stafford but it was something that upset us anyway."

His side competed well for 40 minutes on Tuesday against a side containing the likes of Kevin Doyle and Jamie O'Hara.

Wolves scored two quick-fire goals minutes before the interval and dominated the second half after Burr made 10 changes to keep his troops fresh for the weekend.

"I didn't think at lunchtime on Monday that we'd be able to field a side with the bug that's gone through the camp," admitted the manager.

"We're just pleased that we managed to get one or two with 45 minutes and get that out of them, but they were feeling it I must admit.

"We got through the game and obviously it give us chance to have a look at one or two of the youth team as well, which I was delighted with to be honest.

"They put a good strong side out did Wolves and I don't think we'll come up against that sort of opposition. It was a good workout and our lads really felt it."

Burr has been pleased with how his new-look squad has come together in pre-season, although reiterates that he and the fans will know more about them in four or five games.

He does not expect to make any new additions in the immediate future and will concentrate on getting the best out of the players available to him.

Burr said: "We'll work with these lads as we've done from day one really and they are a good group to work with I must admit

"They are all working hard."

Burr and his squad will take part in an open training session from 4pm on Thursday at the Swansway Chester Stadium.

Supporters are then invited to join the team in the Blues Bar from 6pm for a question and answer session.
