More than 100 days have passed since FC Halifax Town announced the signing of Kingsley James from Chester FC but the saga is almost over.

Chester should discover this week how much compensation they will receive for the England C midfielder when the case goes before an FA tribunal.

The length of time taken to reach this position has been a huge cause of frustration for Steve Burr, who had hoped for a quick resolution so he could use the compensation to add to his squad.

Opinion: The amount of time taken to sort out Kingsley James' tribunal has been farcical, writes Dave Powell

Following his side's 1-0 defeat at Altrincham on Saturday, Burr confirmed the tribunal was fixed for this week but but warned it could take time for whatever compensation is due to be made available for strengthening.

Burr said: "There's no process of appeal and the decision will be made on the day, but I wouldn't have thought whatever they reach a settlement on you'd get it there and then because it will probably take a couple of weeks

"We'll have to just see what happens with that but it's this week and the sooner the better for us."

The two clubs are understood to be well apart in terms of valuations and the tribunal panel will expect them to provide evidence to support their case taking into account the player's age, performance, contract, interest from other clubs and potential.

James moved to Chester last summer on a 12-month deal after leaving Hereford United.

He was the club's most impressive performer over the first half of the campaign although his form dipped from January onwards. In total he made 46 appearances, scoring three goals.

Rotherham-born James turned down an improved contract with the Blues and a nnounced he would be leaving the club as he wanted a move nearer to his South Yorkshire home for personal reasons.

Halifax had two bids rejected for the 23-year-old before signing him on July 11 .

James has been an ever-present for the struggling Shaymen this season, scoring twice in 18 league games. He netted in a 2-2 draw in the FA Cup with Guiseley at the weekend.
