Goalkeeper Tony Thompson has confirmed his departure from Chester FC .

Following talks with manager Jon McCarthy, the 21-year-old was informed he was not offered a contract for next season.

Thompson ended the 2015-16 campaign as number one, starting 12 of the last 15 games as he kept Jon Worsnop out of the team.

But with Worsnop having 12 months to run on his contract and the club unable to keep both, Thompson's future had been in doubt.

The shot-stopper has now confirmed he won't be remaining at the Lookers Vauxhall Stadium.

McCarthy has reached an agreement with a League One club to bring in a new keeper on a season-long loan and that deal should be completed soon.

Thompson moved to Chester in January after leaving Morecambe when the short-term deal he signed last summer expired.

He was previously with Rotherham United and had spells on loan at Chelmsford City and Southport.

Liverpool-born Thompson was brought in as a replacement for Dylan Forth to provide competition to Worsnop.

He made his debut in a 3-0 win at Altrincham after Worsnop was dropped and started the next seven games.

Thompson himself was then dropped in the wake of three straight losses with with Worsnop returning for the 3-3 draw at Guiseley.

However, Thompson returned to the team when McCarthy took over as caretaker boss after Steve Burr had been sacked as the Blues won three of their last four games.

He departs having made 13 appearances for the club in all competitions.
