TONY Durkin plans to put his wealth of experience and business know-how to good effect in his new role as chairman of Chester FC.

The 59-year-old was elected following a unanimous vote at a meeting of the club’s new-look board on Tuesday. He replaces Chris Pilsbury, who decided on Friday not to stand for re-election following a three-year spell as chairman.

Durkin, founder of engineering manufacturing company QHP, said: “I’ve been a Chester fan since I was a boy so this really is a fabulous honour. I was knocked out by the unanimous vote and I’m looking forward to the challenge.”

Durkin believes he has the right business experience to lead the Blues forward and build on the solid foundations laid by Pilsbury in the first three years of Chester FC’s existence.

“They did a fantastic job and I really take my hat off to them,” said the father-of-two, who lives in Mickle Trafford.

Durkin plans to introduce a more ‘modern’ business approach.

He said: “I’m excited about it. It’s a great opportunity. I want us to become a benchmark for supporter-owned clubs. We can set an example as a nice, tightly-run club.”

Durkin founded QHP in 1987. He sold the firm two years ago but is still involved in the business.
