Chester FC boss Steve Burr is pleased to have added Steven Hewitt to his squad after signing the ex-Burnley midfielder last week.

Burr revealed he had been 'very impressed' with the 22-year-old during a trial before Christmas but thought he had missed out when League One club Shrewsbury Town became interested.

When a move to the Greenhous Meadow failed to materialise, Chester swooped to sign him on a deal until the end of the season.

Hewitt featured as a substitute in the 1-1 draw with Altrincham on Saturday and showed up well in his 20 minute cameo.

"We had him in just before Christmas after having been released from Burnley," Burr told the club's official website.

"We only had him in for a week but we are very impressed with him. Before Christmas we tried to do something with him but then he got an offer from Shrewsbury, so we thought we were going to lose him.

"Nothing happened there so now he's come back and we'll see how things progress with him. He's a central midfield player who can also play at right back so we are very pleased to have him."

Meanwhile, Burr admitted he was 'disappointed' to lose the services of defender Alex Whitmore after his club Burnley opted to send him on loan to National League rivals Gateshead rather than extend his time with Chester.

"I'm disappointed that he's going to another club at this level, if it was from the league then I would have understood it a bit more," said Burr.

"We'd like to thank Alex for what he's done during his time here and wish him all of the best for the future."
