Chester FC manager Steve Burr thought his side had 'weathered the storm' in the cross-border derby before gifting Wrexham the lead through a 'dreadful' mistake leading to a penalty which Connor Jennings scored.

The Blues were second best for long periods of the game with the Dragons passing up a host of chances to open the scoring, particularly in the first-half.

Following the game, Burr said he felt his team were getting on an even keel when on 65 minutes Craig Mahon gave possession up in midfield and one pass released Kayden Jackson and he drew a foul from Ryan Astles, leaving referee Adrian Holmes with no option but to point to the spot and show the defender a red card.

Jennings converted the penalty and Wrexham were ruthless in exploiting the extra man with further goals from the excellent Jackson and Robbie Evans capping a miserable afternoon for the near 1,000 Blues fans who made the trip to the Racecourse.

"It was a dreadful ball across to put the Wrexham lad and one ball over the top and Ryan has caught the lad and not only are you down to 10 men but you've got to face a penalty and they've scored from it," said Burr afterwards.

"I felt we were under pressure in the first-half but I thought the boys were magnificent with the way they defended and the effort and the work-rate.

"Up to that point in the second-half we changed things around a little bit to cope with the extra man that Wrexham had in the middle of the park and I thought we were starting to get a foothold and then we've self-destructed a little bit.

"If you look back at the goals and the games that we've lost this season, sometimes it's not been through good play but basic mistakes from ourselves.

"I thought Ryan was tremendous to be honest and Ben Heneghan again but with the ball over the top the lad has got in front of him and been clever and he's knocked him and it's a penalty.

"I thought we had some good chances in the first-half that we could have done better with and I know they had a few as well.

"I felt that in the first-half we couldn't quite cope with their extra man in midfield and that's why we changed things around at half-time. I thought we were coping okay with the shape and in the second-half 15 minutes in we seemed to have weathered that storm and then got a foothold in the game and then we give possession away and Wrexham make the most of it with the through ball, get the penalty and score from it so that was hard to take."
