Ben Heneghan became the latest Chester FC player to move north of the border having penned a two-year deal at Motherwell yesterday.

But Heneghan is one of only a small group of former Blues players to have made a direct switch from Chester to Scotland with just seven players having done so.

We take a look at the players to have made the switch during Chester's 131-year history.

BEN HENEGHAN

Signed in August 2014 from Stoke City following a successful trial spell, defender Heneghan soon became an integral part of the Chester side under Steve Burr.

A commanding presence at the heart of defence, Heneghan earned England C honours during his time at Chester and fashioned himself a reputation as one of the finest and most promising defenders outside of the Football League.

Heneghan's high point for the Blues came shortly after his arrival when he etched his name into Chester FC folklore by firing home the winner in the cross-border derby with Wrexham on September 22, 2014, handing the Blues a 2-1 victory with the last kick of the game.

Motherwell-bound Heneghan ends his spell at the Lookers Vauxhall Stadium with a record of 92 appearances and seven goals.

DANNY WILLIAMS

Signed on loan from Kendal Town by Neil Young during the Conference North-winning campaign of 2012/13, Williams quickly impressed on the left of midfield.

Williams made 28 appearances, scoring twice, during his spell with Chester and Young had been hopeful of keeping hold of him on a permanent basis. But a move to Scottish side Inverness Caledonian Thistle beckoned and Williams has since gone on to win the Scottish Cup with Caley in 2015.

He will next season be plying his trade for Dundee having signed a pre-contract agreement with the Dark Blues in March. He will sign a three-year deal at Dens Park.

IAIN JENKINS

Signed from Everton in 1993, Jenkins proved a hit with the Blues and spent five years with the club, making 160 appearances, before making a switch to Dundee United in March 1998 alongside Julian Alsford for an undisclosed fee.

Jenkins, a Northern Ireland international alongside current Chester boss Jon McCarthy, would make just 14 appearances in two years for the Tannadice Park outfit before returning to play in England with Shrewsbury Town, finishing his career with a short-lived spell back at Chester in 2001/2002.

Jenkins moved management as boss of Dundee North End in 2006 and then Tayport. He served as assistant manager at St Mirren between 2010 and 2011.

JULIAN ALSFORD

Defender Alsford joined Jenkins in making the switch to Dundee in March as the cash-strapped Blues were forced into selling off their prized assets, including teenage midfielder Matt McKay, to stave off the threat of administration.

Signed in 1994, former Watford man Alsford made 141 Football League appearances for Chester before switching to Tannadice.

His spell at the Tangerines wouldn't prove fruitful, though, and Alsford left the Scottish side having made just three appearances.

He had a loan spell at Barnet before returning for a brief stint back at Chester the following season. He then dropped into non-league football with Dorchester Town.

IAN McCALDON

Signed by Mark Wright from Oxford United on loan in 1992, giant keeper McCaldon was signed on a permanent basis in 2003 to provide competition for Wayne Brown and went on to make 13 appearances in the Conference for Chester during their title-winning campaign.

The Liverpudlian stopper, who began his career in Scotland with Livingston, left the Blues prior to the start of their first season back in the Football League and headed north of the border to join Ross County.

He remained in Scotland for the remainder of his playing career and took in stops at Peterhead and Berwick Rangers.

JOHN BURKE

Full-back Burke arrived at Chester during the 1983/84 season having spent the previous season with Exeter City.

He made three appearances for the Grecians and made the same amount at Sealand Road as he failed to break into manager John Sainty's side.

He left Chester that season and headed to Scotland where he joined Larkhall Thistle.

HARRY COLVILLE

Scottish centre back Colville spent a short spell with Chester during the 1947-48 season, arriving from Raith Rovers having began his career at Falkirk.

Kirkaldy-born Colville would only feature four times for Chester, scoring once before heading back to Scotland to link up with Raith once more.

He then joined Falkirk again before spending five years at Dunfermline Athletic, the club where he would finish his playing career in 1960.

Colville died in March 1999 following a long illness.
