FOR the second successive season Chester FC’s title-winning exploits are to be recognised in Parliament.

John McDonnell MP today tabled an early day motion (EDM) in the House of Commons to congratulate the fan-owned phoenix club – formed following the demise of Chester City in 2010 – on their third successive championship success.

Mr McDonnell, Labour MP for Hayes and Harlington, did the same 12 months ago after Neil Young’s side won the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Premier Division.

This year’s motion reads: “That this House congratulates Chester Football Club on winning the Conference North title, its third championship in a row; notes that it scored over 100 goals for a second successive season and amassed 100 points for a third successive season; further notes that it has now reached the Conference, the league from which the former Chester City FC disappeared three seasons ago; further congratulates manager Neil Young, captain George Horan and all staff, players and fans for their determination and solidarity; and commends this community club as a brilliant advertisement for supporter ownership.”

The motion has already been signed by two other Labour MPs, Jeremy Corbyn (Islington North) and Ian Lavery (Wansbeck).

EDMs are submitted by MPs for debate in the Commons.

They actually rarely reach the debate stage but are used by MPs to draw attention to a particular event or cause.

Dom Collins, meanwhile, has revealed he is leaving the club.

The 22-year-old defender – one of nine Blues players out of contract – said on Twitter: “I will not be a Chester FC player next season. Like to thank the management team and the fans who have been brilliant to me.”

Young does not intend to release his retained list until after the club’s presentation evening on Saturday.

But he knows he cannot prevent the players he has told can go – like Collins – from announcing their departures themselves.
