Matty Hughes is open minded about the future and insists his main focus now is scoring goals for Chester FC.
Hughes’ name was on the lips of supporters when the transfer window opened after his productive loan spell, in which he scored five times, was cut short at the start of December.
Steve Burr kept in close contact with Fleetwood Town and when the League One club brought in Wolves striker Liam McAlinden, the door opened for Hughes to return on loan for the remainder of the season.
His contract at Fleetwood expires in the summer and Chester fans already hope the 22-year-old can be convinced to become a permanent part of the squad.
“I’ve not really spoken to Fleetwood about my contract but the manager there told me to come to Chester and do what I did before,” said Hughes, who rejected the advances of another Conference Premier club in favour of a return to the Swansway Chester Stadium.
“I scored five goals here last time and things went really well for me so if I was coming back to a club in the Conference then there was really only one place I wanted to go back to.
“I didn’t want to go to another club and have to start all over again. I’m familiar with Chester and the idea is that I can pick up where I left off.
“I’m just focused on doing my best and scoring as many goals as I can. I haven’t really thought about a target or how many games are left but I definitely want to get into double figures for a start and then go from there.”
Hughes, who moved to Fleetwood last January from Skelmersdale United, came straight back into the side at Southport on Saturday.
His gave the Blues far more attacking threat but, despite a few promising openings, the game ended goalless, which frustrated the Wigan-born forward.
Hughes said: “The pitch and the wind was a massive factor in the game but I thought we looked good in the first-half and if we’d have taken a couple of those chances I think we’d have put the game to bed.
“I’m not sure why but in the second-half we started to knock a lot of long balls and that didn’t suit us with three smallish lads up front.”
Chester, whose midweek game with Lincoln City was postponed due to a frozen pitch, host Kidderminster Harriers on Saturday (3pm) and Hughes is confident results will turn.
“Where we are now is not where we want to be and our aim is to finish in the top half, which I think is more than achievable,” he said.
“Obviously I knew a lot of the lads anyway when I walked in the dressing room at Southport but the manager’s made some new signings too and I noticed there weren’t any little groups and everybody was together.
“We’ve got a great bunch of lads and we want to pick up as many points as we can between now and the end of the season.”
