Chester FC youngster Ollie Nugent has been called up to represent Great Britain at the Rio 2016 Paralympics.

The teenager was announced as part of a 14-strong squad that will compete for Paralympics GB in seven-a-side football this September in Brazil.

Nugent, who has cerebral palsy after suffering a stroke when he was born, will be one of 12 players making their Games debuts as Great Britain attempt to improve on their seventh-placed finish at London 2012.

The forward, who hails from Irby on the Wirral, linked up with Chester's academy after leaving Tranmere Rovers and had an excellent 2015/16 campaign.

He helped the Blues win the North West Youth Alliance Premier Division title and NWYA Open Cup, and scored against Oldham Athletic in the FA Youth Cup.

Nugent made his senior debut against Hyde United in the Cheshire Senior Cup in January.

Academy head coach Calum McIntyre said: "Everyone at the club is delighted for Ollie and would like to congratulate him on this terrific achievement.

"Ollie has obviously represented the England cerebral palsy squad for some time now but to represent Team GB at the Paralympics is a huge honour and we are all delighted for him.

"Ollie was a huge part of last year’s youth team success and I know hard he works to succeed. I’ll be following events from Rio closely but I know he’ll be a huge success."

Nugent was part of the Great Britain team that came fourth at the IFCPF Pre-Paralympic Tournament in Spain last month and one of seven players included in the squad who helped England to a fifth-placed finish at last year's Cerebral Palsy Football World Championships.

Penny Briscoe MBE, Paralympics GB chef de mission for Rio 2016, said: "This is a fantastic and talented group of players and I’d like to pay credit to all of the home nations for the excellent work they have undertaken to identify new talent and to bring them through to compete on the international stage.

"I’d also like to congratulate the players for all of the hard work which has led to their selection to the team. They have the opportunity to shine when the Games get under way in 86 days’ time."

Team leader Jeff Davis added: "I am really proud to lead these players as we prepare to compete at the Rio Paralympics, it’s a fantastic opportunity to showcase this sport and I believe their hard work will pay dividends at the Games.

"The top teams are incredibly competitive and there will be no easy matches, but we feel ready to take on the challenge."
