NEIL Young is ‘not far away’ from signing a new contract to remain as Chester FC manager.

The title-winning boss has been offered a one-year deal that will be extended by 12 months if he wins promotion to the Blue Square North this season or next.

Young, whose current contract runs out in May, said: “The club have offered me a contract and I believe we’re not far away from agreeing something.

“I initially asked for a two-year deal in respect to what has already been achieved in a very short space of time and to be able to plan going forward.

“But it’s initially a one-year deal that will become a two-year deal depending on whether we get promoted this year or next.”

Discussions between Young and the Chester board have been ongoing since the end of October.

While the 37-year-old boss would prefer a straight two-year contract the board favour an incentive-based deal.

Young’s track record since taking over the Exacta Stadium hotseat in May 2010 is impressive.

The former Colwyn Bay manager led the reborn Blues to championship glory in their first year and has continued the success this season.

His team sit top of their division and are into the last 32 of the FA Trophy, four wins away from a dream trip to Wembley.

Chester chief executive Pat Cluskey said: “Neil has been offered a contract, which has been drawn up by the club’s solicitor, and we hope to come to an agreement as soon as possible.”

Young has won 45, drawn 13 and lost eight of the 66 league games he has taken charge of as Blues boss.
