Craig Mahon accepts it’s time for the rest of the Chester FC squad to start ‘chipping in’ with goals and ease the burden on Ross Hannah.

Chester paid the price for failing to convert their chances last weekend as Altrincham held them to a 1-1 draw despite being under the cosh for much of the game.

Hannah, who has accounted for 12 of the team’s last 14 goals, netted his 16th of the season against the Robins but the reliance on the striker has become a weakness.

Mahon maintains the fact the Blues are creating chances is a positive but he admits Hannah’s team-mates need to find their scoring touch too.

"I’d be more worried if weren’t creating the chances but we are and fortunately we’ve got Ross scoring goals but the rest of lads have got to chip in, help him and start scoring a few more ourselves,” said Mahon.

"Last weekend was frustrating because I didn’t think Altrincham had many chances and we make one mistake and it costs us but we’ll learn from that. We’ve got to stick together and keep moving forward.

"No matter who you are playing in this league, if you’re 1-0 up they’re still in the game. It doesn’t matter if they’ve been poor all season because all it takes is one mistake or one chance and it will cost you so we’ve got to learn from that and start killing games off.”

It has been a stop-start campaign for Mahon, who was one of the stars of last term, but the Irish winger has knuckled down on the training ground and last weekend was arguably his best performance of the season.

Having made his first start for five games, the 26-year-old hopes to keep his place for the visit to Aldershot Town on Saturday (3pm).

Mahon said: "It’s nice have a bit of form back in myself. I’ve been working hard on and off the pitch in training. I’ve been biding my time and waiting for a chance and I got that against Macclesfield when I felt like I came on and tried to do something and the gaffer gave me a chance to start so hopefully I’ve done enough to start again. I just want to keep playing now and get some momentum myself to keep the form going.

"The gaffer gave me a little free role against Altrincham to come in off the line and get at people and I felt like my old self.

"I had the confidence and I think that’s what I’ve been lacking over the last couple of months so hopefully I can keep that confidence going."
