NEW boy Luke Holden is going the right way about winning a permanent transfer to Chester FC.

The 22-year-old made a lively debut off the bench on Saturday and then produced a man-of-the-match performance in the Cheshire Senior Cup defeat to Stalybridge Celtic on Tuesday.

Holden, whose pace and crossing ability earned him a move to Charlton Athletic earlier in his career, has signed for Chester on a short-term deal from Droylsden.

But Neil Young will make the winger a fixed member of his squad if he continues to impress.

Blues boss Young, whose second-placed team are away to Whitby Town on Saturday (3pm), said: “I thought Luke was outstanding on Tuesday.

“What I like about my wide attackers is for them to come off the line and get in the little holes, just like Luke and Robbie Booth did on Tuesday. When a player does that, it leaves the full-back with a decision to make. They can go in tight but when that happens it opens up the avenue of getting your full-back down the side.

“I thought Luke’s touch was fantastic, he was involved all the time and hopefully he can keep it going.

“We’ve got an agreement with him and if keeps on doing the business in these four weeks I’ve got the money to bring him in.”

Chester return to league action on Saturday when they take on a second-from-bottom Whitby side who have lost their last seven matches in all competitions.

Young, who expects captain George Horan (knee) and Michael Powell (leg) to shrug off knocks, was encouraged by the second-half performance against Stalybridge and wants more of the same against the struggling North Yorkshire outfit.

Young said: “Whitby are losing games but when people ask me what the difference is between this division and the division we were in last year, I say it’s harder to win away now as teams are more organised at home.

“We won’t be taking anything for granted but I expect us to go there and put in a performance.”

The Blues will set off for the game tomorrow and stay overnight in a hotel in Middlesbrough. Their travelling party could include at least one new face as Young is in talks to sign a non-league midfielder and a striker currently on the books of a League Two club.
