Blues goalkeeper John Danby, the only player to pass the 100-game for mark for Chester City and Chester FC, has been transfer listed.

Danby, 30, signed a new two-year contract with the club 12 months ago but the custodian does not feature in manager Steve Burr's future plans.

He is one of only three senior players under contract for next season - the other two being midfielders Danny Harrison and John Rooney - but is now heading for the exit door.

Relegation from the Conference Premier means the playing budget will be reduced next season and Burr said that had been a factor in his decision.

Burr said: "Myself and Jon McCarthy had a meeting with the chairman last week to look at the budget for the coming season and the players who are still under contract.

"John is a high earner and we have had a chat and decided to make him available for transfer.

"It's always unfortunate when decisions like this have to be made, but we are putting together a new look squad for the coming season."

Stoke-born Danby joined the Blues in May 2006 from Kidderminster Harriers and went on to make 133 appearances before the club was wound up in March 2010.

He moved to Eastwood Town but returned to the Swansway Chester Stadium in June 2011 when former boss Neil Young snapped him up.

Danby was a key figure as the Blues won the Northern Premier League Premier Division and Conference North titles.

He started last season as number one but fell out of favour midway through the campaign when Aaron Chapman was signed on loan from Chesterfield.

Danby played more than 230 games for the club, setting the record for the most consecutive appearances with 128 and the most consecutive clean sheets, going eight games without conceding a goal in the 2011/12 season.
