Chester FC hope to confirm a double signing on Tuesday afternoon with boss Jon McCarthy adding a defender and a midfielder to his ranks.

The duo have agreed terms with the Blues and are expected to finalise 12-month deals as the squad reports for the start of pre-season.

Ex-Wrexham midfielder Elliott Durrell has been heavily linked with a move to the Lookers Vauxhall Stadium with AFC Telford United manager Rob Smith claiming the 26-year-old was heading for Chester after missing out on his signature.

Durrell scored 14 league goals for Tamworth last term but is a free agent after leaving the Lambs at the end of the season.

McCarthy signed Durrell's former Wrexham team-mate Blaine Hudson last week as a replacement for Ben Heneghan, who turned down a new deal in favour a move to Scottish Premiership side Motherwell .

The Chester manager has been in talks with a number of defenders over the past fortnight as he looks to get next season's back four in place.

He is now understood to have reached an agreement with a centre-back who has been released from a Championship club who can also operate at right-back.

The double signing will take McCarthy's squad up to 15 with a loan move for a goalkeeper from a League One club set to be confirmed in the next week.

Talks are ongoing with a number of options for the left-back position and McCarthy hopes to tie up a highly-rated defender on loan from a Football League side as well.

Getting those deals over the line would give McCarthy a 17-man squad with the Blues boss then aiming to add to two new strikers in the coming weeks.
