Jon McCarthy praised the resilience and character the Blues demonstrated in the 2-1 win at AFC Telford United on Tuesday.

Chester struggled in possession for the most part and fell behind on 19 minutes but managed to overturn that deficit and secure a third win in four games.

Mike Grogan had fired the Bucks into the lead but John Rooney curled home a free kick on 28 minutes and Sean McConville won the game on 66 minutes with a well-placed header.

Telford, who on this evidence have much to do to avoid returning to the Conference North, had some pressure late on but the Blues defence never looked like being breached.

McCarthy said: "Telford hadn't won a game all season and were able to get a lift against Torquay so we came here with that bit of timing and I think that changes things because they've got a little bit more belief about them.

"We weren't playing well and the passing game that we want to play wasn't quite coming together and we made some mistakes but we keep trying to persist with it because we knew that when we have little spells it might be enough to get us something.

"John Rooney will say himself hes disappointed with his performance in general play but that little bit of quality he's got got us back in the game and gave us the belief and you could see the lads go again.

"It got us to half time and we felt like we'd have a bit more, and we did without ever hitting the heights of some of the stuff that people have started to see from us this season.

"There was enough quality and some belief and we started to build some pressure with some crosses and some corners that we felt would eventually get us something and it did.

"You come to these places and we want to play all the time but it was important that we withstood some pressure because they're very direct with a lot of big diagonal balls and our lads stood up to it and that's really pleasing.

"We've been shown that we're able to do two important aspects of what will get you some points in this division."

McCarthy said he was 'delighted' with a return of four wins and 12 points from seven games in September having taken four points from six games in August.

"It's right on our target," said McCarthy.

"I wanted a minimum of nine points but I felt like if we beat Wrexham then we wanted 12. It's been a massive month for us.

"We feel like, without carried away because we're only a bit into the season, we've beat all those teams that are below us.

"When we've had to come and do that, we've done that and some of those teams are having odd results but we're consistently beating those teams, which is significant for us."

"Now there's a little run with two home games where there's a team that's just below and one that's just above us and that's our next little target."
