Gareth Roberts has stressed the need for the Blues to capitalise on back-to-back wins, starting at Grimsby Town on Saturday (3pm).

Roberts, who has started every game this season, understands the workings of football better than most having made more than 500 appearances in the Football League.

Wins over Southport and Wrexham have have raised spirits at the Swansway Chester Stadium and the Blues, who now have consecutive away games, head to Blundell Park aiming to make it three in a row.

Roberts said: "We've had two home wins, great results for us and obviously we need to kick on

"We've got two away games now and we need to take something from them games."

Roberts, 36, started his career with Liverpool before going on to have fruitful spells at Tranmere Rovers, Doncaster Rovers and Derby County.

He came close to joining the Blues under former manager Neil Young and the again after Steve Burr took charge but opted to remain in the Football League with Bury and then Notts County.

Burr got his man in the summer when the Wrexham-born left back signed a 12-month deal with the club.

Roberts was pleased to get one over his hometown club on Monday but knows the Blues could have paid the price for a poor first half performance.

He said: "We didn't get going and it's been a bit of a problem for us this season

"Wrexham started really strong, scored in the first minute and probably should have scored a few more but we hung in there and it was 1-0 at half-time when we changed it around a little bit.

"We got on the front foot in the second half and we dominated it really. It was a shame it was the last minute when we scored because I think we could have got a few more.

"All the boys came in absolutely buzzing and made up that we nicked it really after the first half performance."
