Ben Heneghan is keen to continue developing his central defensive partnership with Chester FC team-mate Michael Kay.

As he intimated he would, manager Steve Burr has rotated his squad in the past few matches but one constant has been the pairing of Heneghan and Kay.

The pair have started the last four games alongside each other as well as the three before that until a two-match suspension for Kay interrupted the run.

Both are out of the contract in the summer but The Chronicle understands new deals have been put on the table this week.

Heneghan, who arrived n August after Stoke City released him, has been outstanding since being given a chance in his natural position of centre half.

His form earned him a place in the England C standby squad and has drawn attention from elsewhere, however the Blues are hopeful both he and Kay will put pen to paper.

"I'm enjoying playing with him," said 21-year-old Heneghan.

"He helps me out, I help him out and that's what you need at the back. We're both comfortable on the ball so that helps and I'm happy with how things are going.

"Obviously we don't want to concede the goals so we've got to try and keep that to a minimum."

One area where Salford-bord Heneghan has the upper hand on Kay is in the goalscoring stakes.

Kay, 25, has still to open his account for the club despite making 67 appearances whereas Heneghan has scored seven times in 39 games this season.

"I'm killing on him on that so I've got to try and get the gap even further," said Heneghan.

"I'm just trying to do what I can for the team. I try my best to keep the goals out at the back and if I can chip in with a few goals that will do me.

"I'm aiming towards my target so the closer I get, or if I reach it, then even better but it's good to help the team out. I'm targeting double figures so that's 10, which would be one every two games so we'll see if I can do it."

Heneghan scored the equaliser in the 1-1 draw at Alfreton Town last weekend but wants an improvement when Woking come to the Swansway Chester Stadium on Saturday (3pm).

Heneghan said: "It wasn't really a football game at Alfreton, it was just a battle. It's not the type of place you go and play the nice football so you've just got to stick it in, be tough with the game and battle it out.

"We've got to do better than our last two games and we've got to get back on track.

"Our aim is obviously to finish in the top half of the table, which would be a good achievement for the club. We want to get back to playing at the standard we should be at and then push on from there."
