Having seen his Chester FC side fall to their second successive defeat at the weekend after going down 2-1 at home to Forest Green Rovers, Blues boss Jon McCarthy defended his team selection.

McCarthy says the system that he employed was designed to frustrate the big-spending visitors and was slightly annoyed when asked whether the 2-1 scoreline flattered Chester.

"That would be really cruel," said McCarthy.

"They have a lot of the ball. In terms of our game we set up with eight behind. We had two that were going to press. We invited them to have a lot of the ball and in terms of play I don't think that Forest Green have created an awful lot of chances."

BRANCH ON LIFE AFTER JAIL

Former Chester City striker Michael Branch made headlines for all the wrong reasons in November 2012 when he was jailed for seven years at Chester Crown Court after being found guilty for intent to supply drugs.

One-time Everton wonderkid Branch, now 37, was released after three years and has spoken candidly about his fall from grace in a revealing interview and how he is rebuilding his life and training to be an accountant.

"I’m not a bad person, I made a mistake," Branch told Everton magazine.

"I was ashamed of myself and I was really worried what people would think of me – Joe Royle, Howard Kendall and people like that, but…

“You’ve spent your life being told what to do, when to eat, when to train, when to play and then all of a sudden you can do what you want and that’s when some ex-players take a wrong route."

IT'S BEEN HOW LONG?!

It's hard to believe that it has been 24 years since Chester played their first league match at the Deva Stadium.

September 5, 1992 saw the Blues brush aside Burnley, now part of the Premier League elite, in Football League Division Two 3-0 thanks to goals from Neil Morton, Chris Lightfoot and the late Paul Comstive.

How time flies.

NO LOAN SIGNINGS EXPECTED

McCarthy was quizzed on whether he would be looking to add further bodies to his squad on a temporary basis following the defeat to Forest Green and, in short, the answer was no.

"I'm happy with my squad and I'm committed to my squad," said the Chester manager.

"I'm not going to go against this squad. They are the ones that I have picked. The board have backed me with a budget in terms of the players and I'm not going to go back asking for more money. They have backed me completely.

"If we get a series of injuries then maybe but I am happy with the options I have."

KILLOCK'S PAIN

Having been sidelined through injury shortly after arriving at the Blues this summer, Ross Killock's wait for his Chester bow looks set to go on for some time yet.

McCarthy confirmed that Killock, who had been close to fitness, pulled a hamstring in training last week and has had his recovery pushed back by another 'three of four weeks'.

"There were a lot of tears at the training ground and I had to put an arm around him and it is a real blow," said the Chester boss.

"We will get him in to see some other specialists. Is it some kind of alignment thing that a chiropractor can sort out? At least we know what the situation is now and how we can treat it. When we get him back he will be a good addition."
