Ben Heneghan's departure from Chester FC is looking increasingly likely with each passing day.

Offered a new deal by Blues boss Jon McCarthy during the summer, the 22-year-old defender has not put pen to paper to extend his Chester stay and following another excellent season looks set to move on to pastures new.

Heneghan, who signed in 2014 from Stoke City, has become one of Chester's most prized assets and looks destined for a Football League career, although there has been interest from National League sides.

Here's a look at some possible destinations for Heneghan.

BLACKBURN ROVERS

The Sun reported earlier in the season that Heneghan was a rumoured target for Rovers, with Hull City and Burnley also mooted as potential suitors.

But with Hull and Burnley earning promotion, a step up of that magnitude is unlikely for the Blues centre back.

Any rumoured interest from Blackburn appears to have coolled off and the end of Paul Lambert's reign at Ewood Park in May likely signalled the end of the club's interest.

CREWE ALEXANDRA

The Railwaymen suffered relegation to League Two at the end of last season and aren't likely to have a mammoth warchest to go into the new season.

Heneghan is a player believed to be on the radar of the Gresty Road club and manager Steve Davis isn't averse to dipping into non-league football in search of new talent.

Heneghan is the right age for the Alex and would fit the bill, a cheaper option that signing an experienced League One or League Two centre back.

A move to Crewe could be a good fit for both.

TRANMERE ROVERS

Rumours were rife a fortnight ago that Heneghan was bound for Prenton Park but, as yet, those rumours have proved to be without foundation.

England C international Heneghan knows that his stock is high, certainly high enough to earn a move to League Two, and a move to Tranmere would appear a sideways step.

Money will likely be a factor and Tranmere have a healthy budget this season but I would expect Heneghan to have loftier ambitions and spurn a move to Chester's rivals.

BARROW AFC

Pretty much as above.

Like 99.9% of National League players who are more than half decent, Heneghan has been linked with a move to the Cumbrian side, who snapped up Ross Hannah at the end of the season.

They have considerable financial clout going into the new season but remain a somewhat unattractive proposition given the interest from Elswhere.

Can't see this one materialising.

SHREWSBURY TOWN

The Shropshire side have been linked with Heneghan ever since the end of the season and he was certainly on their radar.

But interest appears to have coolled from Mickey Mellon although it could be a case of biding their time and seeing what other options they have available.

Town would likely represent Heneghan's best chance of being a starter with a League One side.

DONCASTER ROVERS

It's been a tough few years for Doncaster.

Playing in the Championship in the 2013-14 season, Rovers will be playing League Two football next season after relegation from League One but will be one of the favourites to bounce back up under the stewardship of manager Darren Ferguson.

A healthy budget and excellent facilities will see them able to attract the cream of League Two and the National League and their interest in Heneghan is believed to be very real.

BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION

Another club linked with Heneghan earlier in the year.

Expected to mount another challenge for the Premier League next season, a move for Heneghan to the Championship club seems highly unlikely now.
