Ian Sharps has been confirmed as assistant manager at Chester FC.

The 35-year-old had been number two to Jon McCarthy during his successful spell as caretaker manager that saw him handed the role on a permanent basis at the weekend.

Sharps' appointment had been expected following the announcement of McCarthy as new manager on Saturday and the deal has now been completed to make the ex-Tranmere Rovers, Rotherham United and AFC Telford United centre back McCarthy's right-hand man.

While no decision on Sharps' playing future has been announced, the Chronicle understands that last season's club skipper may well register himself as a player again next season, although his focus will be on his duties as an assistant.

Warrington-born Sharps made over 500 appearances in the Football League having made his debut for Tranmere in 1998.
