Chester FC Community Trust organised a skills demonstration on the Lookers Vauxhall Stadium pitch to promote the female game to celebrate Girls' Football Week.

Teams from Cherry Grove Primary School, AFC Waverton and Chester & District Girls showed off their skills at half-time during the match with Lincoln City on Saturday.

The girls completed a dribbling challenge, passing and possession practice and had a five-a-side game, showing excellent technique and playing with smiles on their faces to cheers and applause from the crowd.

Players from the Chester FC Women’s team and the University of Chester Women’s team, who the community trust work closely with on a number of projects, supported the demonstration.

Steph Oscroft, a community coach for the club, explained: "It’s fantastic to be able to highlight girls football in front of the Chester crowd and invite the local teams along.

"It’s great to work with players from the Chester FC Women's team and the University of Chester Women’s team in promoting female football in the area.

"We’ve got lots of exciting projects lined up and part of our female football development plan is to have monthly girls footy festivals which will be similar to Saturday’s event: getting girls to enjoy playing football.

"We’d like to thank all the players, parents and coaches who supported the event and to Chester FC Women and the University of Chester Women’s team for their help on the pitch."

Women’s football is the largest female team sport in the country and the third largest team sport after men’s football and cricket.

During the FIFA Women’s World Cup, the FA launched #WeCanPlay, a campaign to get more females playing football and Girls Football Week ran from October 5-11 to encourage more education institutions to run female-specific football sessions.
