Chester FC have thrown their weight behind the White Ribbon Campaign in partnership with charity Chester Women’s Aid.

Sandra Rudd, president of Chester Women's Aid and former Lady Mayoress of Chester, and representatives from the charity met manager Steve Burr and the squad at training on Monday.

The club is backing the campaign, which is the largest global effort of men working to end male violence against women, and will be promoting it at the National League game with Woking on Saturday.

All of the players were given white ribbons to wear to represent the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on November 25, a time when men and women can stand together to condemn the violence that a minority of men perpetrate against women and girls.

Assistant manager Jon McCarthy, who doubles as chief executive of Chester FC Community Trust, said: "White Ribbon Day is something that we really want to support.

"It is a very important message that men need to endorse, particularly sportsmen who have so many supporters, to show that such violence cannot be condoned."

Chester Women's Aid are holding a public event in the city centre on November 22 to hand out white ribbons and raise funds to support families experiencing domestic abuse.

Sandra Rudd said: "We're very grateful to Chester FC for giving their very public support to this campaign and for sending their mascot Big Lupus along to join us on November 22."
