Chester FC boss Jon McCarthy says the Blues are closing in on a replacement for departed goalkeeper Jon Worsnop.

Worsnop, 33, left the Blues by mutual consent on Thursday after finding his first-team opportunities limited at the Lookers Vauxhall Stadium this season owing to the arrival of Liam Roberts.

Roberts, on loan from League One side Walsall, is the only senior goalkeeper on Chester's books heading into this weekend's home clash with Dover Athletic and McCarthy says that a replacement with the experience and credentials to challenge the loanee for the number one spot is a priority.

"We need another keeper," said McCarthy.

"We have Liam, who we are really pleased with, but I need competition for him. I won't be bringing in a keeper who is just in to occupy a place on the bench and something for training.

"There are some things in the offing that we are having a look at and something could happen really quick.

"We would like to have something sorted, if not for the weekend, for next week definitely."

The departure of Worsnop, who joined Chester from Alfreton Town in the summer of 2014, has freed up some money in McCarthy's playing budget but the Blues manager insists that it will be just a goalkeeper that the club will be moving for.

"It's just like for like and we'll be looking for a keeper," he said.

"Our budgets alright, though, and I get plenty of support from my board. Total support."
