Steve Burr expects to announce new contracts for two members of his Chester FC squad in the coming days.

Talks over new deals have been ongoing for the past two weeks and the manager, who himself signed an extension until the end of the 2016-2017 season on Thursday, revealed agreements have been reached with two players.

Burr has stated his desire to retain the core of his squad, with Ben Heneghan, Craig Mahon, Jon Worsnop, Kingsley James, Michael Kay and Ryan Higgins among those he wants to keep.

He confirmed on Thursday offers had been tabled to a number of players and two were ready to sign extensions.

"We've had discussions for the last sort of three weeks now and I'd like to think that we'd have an announcement in the next 24 or 48 hours of a couple of players, which would be great news for us," said Burr.

"But like everything there's one or two things that you've got to deal with but I'd like to think that in the next 48 hours to the beginning of next week we'll be able to announce a couple of signings."

From the squad assembled last summer, only attacking midfielder Sean McConville has a contract for 2015-16.

But given the uncertainly over which the league the club would be in that doesn't concern Burr too much.

"I just think it's the nature of where we are and we can't sometimes delve into long-term contracts with players and don't forget the squad as a whole were a brand new squad at the start of season," he said.

"You've got to see how they bed in and one or two obviously didn't make it with us and moved on.

"I feel we've got a good nucleus of young players here that we can build on and that's the aim.

"We've improved on last year, which is important, and if we can improve on the same sort of levels as we've done this year then I'll be more than happy.

Burr has identified some potential new additions to his squad but said he had not spoken to his targets yet.

"It's a bit too early because I'm just concentrating from now until the end of the season on finishing as strongly as we can," he said.

"Over the next couple of weeks we'll sit down and look at players who have caught the eye this season and lower down, and also there's going to be lads released again from Football League clubs.

"I think probably this time it will be a bit more of a waiting game because hopefully we'll have the nucleus of a good squad and we can wait to get the right sort of players."
