Chris Iwelumo appears primed for his role as the Blues elder statesman this season.

With a  CV boasting  international caps, four promotions, more than 500 games and spells in Denmark, England, Germany and Scotland, he  has been there, done that.

And his 6ft 4ins frame and booming Scottish accent will ensure he has no problem making himself heard in the dressing room.

“Even when I was younger I tried to be one of the leaders because that’s the kind of person I am,” said the 35-year-old, who signed a 12-month deal on Monday.

“It’s a young squad and I’m going to be one of the experienced boys in the dressing room and you need strong characters.

“I believe if you respect people then they will respect you, and that’s the way I live my life.

“I think that’s the kind of character I am. I’m a very positive person and I’ll take that positivity into the dressing room with me.”

Iwelumo, born 10 miles outside Glasgow, started out with St Mirren in 1996 and his career since has taken in 15 clubs in four countries.

Perhaps best remembered for spells with Stoke City and Wolverhampton Wanderers, Iwelumo finished last season at Scottish Premiership side St Johnstone.

He turned down interest from clubs in the Football League to move to the Swansway Chester Stadium, and the move allows him to be near  to his daughters, aged seven and nine.

“I had interest from clubs in League One and League Two but it was too far away and Chester ticks every box for me,” said Iwelumo, who is based in Newcastle-under-Lyme.

“I’ve got two young daughters and they’ve followed me all over the UK but they’re settled in school now and that was a factor in my decision.”

Iwelumo explained his friendship with manager Steve Burr had a role too, and he has huge respect for his fellow Scotsman.

“I know the gaffer very well and a he’s a legend of a guy, he’s very honest and you know what you’re going to get from him,” said Iwelumo, who won four caps for Scotland.

“He was managing one of my good friends and  came up to watch me play for Scotland against Argentina, and we’ve always kept in touch. He’s a top man.”

Although he turns 36 on August 1, Iwelumo is adamant he is  more than capable of troubling  Conference Premier defences.

“I have scored goals everywhere I’ve been and I believe I can do that here now,” he said.

“I’m feeling good, I’m feeling fit and I’m sure all the other boys will be the same. It’s a new group and I can’t wait to get started.”
