Chief scout Alex Hay has left Chester FC to take up a similar role with his former club Tranmere Rovers.

Hay has been appointed as head of scouting at Prenton Park and returns to the club where his career began.

He made 50 appearances for Rovers before joining Rushden and Diamonds and then dropping into non-league with Bangor City and Cammell Laird.

Hay later managed Lairds and friend and former Blues boss Neil Young brought him to the Swansway Chester Stadium in 2011.

He became a key component in the management team, clocking up thousands of miles each season scouting opponents and running the rule over potential signings.

Hay remained with the club following Young's departure in January but has now returned to Prenton Park.

He told Rovers official website: "This is a fantastic opportunity for me and one I couldn’t turn down.

"Everybody knows I’m a Tranmere fan so to have played here and now come back and be able to help the manager and players is fantastic.

"I’m looking forward to getting started and helping in any way I can."

Blues boss Steve Burr is now looking to add a new chief scout to his backroom team.

He said: "Alex has done a good job for me reporting on teams and tracking players since I joined and I would like to personally wish him all the best.

"It’s an opportunity for him to move back into the Football League with his former club and we wish him well."
