CHESTER FC manager Neil Young has pulled off another transfer coup by signing former England Under 17s international defender Michael Kay following his release from Tranmere Rovers.

The 23-year-old right-back today put pen to paper on a one-year deal with the Conference Premier new boys.

Young said: "When I got the text from Michael yesterday to say that he would love to sign for Chester I was delighted.

"A lot of hard work has gone into the deal and we're really pleased he is joining us.

"He's young but experienced, and really, really hungry to come here and do well."

The 6ft 1in Kay, who can also play centre-back, is a product of Sunderland’s academy.

He made his professional debut for the Wearsiders in their FA Cup fourth-round replay defeat at Blackburn Rovers in February 2009.

That proved to be County Durham-born Kay’s first and only appearance for the club and in the 2010-11 season he was sent on loan to Tranmere.

He played 22 times in League One and scored his first professional goal before joining Rovers permanently in June 2011.

Kay started the 2011-12 campaign as Tranmere’s first choice right-back.

But the form of Danny Holmes has meant his first-team chances have been limited since December 2011 and – along with fellow Blues new boy Danny Harrison – was released by Rovers boss Ronnie Moore at the end of last season.

Kay becomes Young’s 12th signing of the summer following the arrivals of defenders Joe Heath and Lee Pugh, midfielders Harrison, Kevin McIntyre and Jason Jarrett, and attackers Alex Titchiner, Jamie Reed, Gareth Seddon, Marc Williams, Craig Lindfield and Craig Mahon.
