Steve Burr described himself as 'flabbergasted' after watching his side lose 3-1 at Macclesfield Town despite being the better team.

Two goals inside three minutes turned the game on its head after the Blues had wasted some excellent chances to take the lead.

Rhys Taylor made a superb penalty save from Sean McConville, the woodwork denied John Rooney and Macc twice cleared off the line before hitting the front.

A clumsy challenge allowed Waide Fairhurst to give them the lead from the spot and he then unleashed a goal of the season contender from 35 yards to send the Blues into the break 2-0 down.

Matthew Barnes-Homer increased the advantage on 53 minutes and although Chester got once back straightaway through Ben Heneghan, the damage was done.

Burr said: "I've never really been involved in a game like that where we've lost and played so well.

"We've missed a penalty which was a bit of a turning point, how the keeper has managed to keep it out I'll never know, but at half time to be 2-0 down I was quite flabbergasted actually.

"I didn't really know what to say to the lads because we were playing so well but it's about putting the ball in the net.

"Football today is about winning and losing but I've taken a lot of pride out of the performance because we couldn't have done much more than put the ball in net.

"That's what you've got to do isn't it and it's disappointing that we didn't score and then completely against the run of play they've found themselves 1-0 up and not only that the second one was a terrific strike and it was their night wasn't it?

"Even the third goal has ricocheted and landed straight to Barnes-Homer's feet."

It was the second league game in succession that the Blues had found themselves having to come from 3-0 behind but the manager felt the performance at Moss Rose had been much better than the one against Eastleigh.

"It was nothing like the Eastleigh game because we played very well and we should have had something out of the game at least," said Burr.

"It's very hard to say that you should have won when you've lost 3-1 but as football people we take a lot of credit out of the game and how we've played and for me there was only one side trying to play.

"Macc have won the game so they are all happy and delighted and have gone home happy so good luck to them but I'm not going to criticise my lads, what I will criticise them about is that we didn't put the ball in the net."

Burr's side are back in action on Saturday when Gateshead, who drew 3-3 at home to Lincoln City on Tuesday, visit the Swansway Chester Stadium (3pm).
