Steve Burr pulled no punches after watching his side suffer another depressing home defeat.

He dubbed the one-sided 3-0 loss to FC Halifax Town 'men against boys' and admitted those fans who booed on full-time had good reason to.

Halifax didn't have to work particularly hard for the three points, which makes this result even more concerning.

Richard Peniket, Scott Boden and Matty Pearson got the goals for the Shaymen, who are big, hungry and well-drilled.

For Chester, the short, sharp interplay on show in the 3-1 win at Braintree Town last weekend had disappeared.

Instead the fans were subjected to a performance filled with aimless punts and mishit passes from the first minute to the last.

"We're nowhere near where I want us to be, nowhere near at all," said Burr after the game.

"The goals we've gifted to Halifax didn't help us one bit but we've got a lot of hard work ahead of us.

"I don't want to stand in the dugout and hear fans booing my team on the park. I want to hear them cheering about us creating chances and energy and all the things that go with being a footballer.

"I'm a fan at the end of the day and I'm not liking what I'm seeing."

Fax keeper Matt Glennon was called into action once, when he made a comfortable stop from Craig Mahon towards the end of the first half.

Apart from that, there were a couple of half chances that went begging and some hopeful long rangers that were never close.

"It was not good enough," was how the manager summed up his team's attacking display.

"As a team you create things and create chances for other people but at the minute we're just not functioning anywhere near like that."

Burr said he could 'absolutely' understand some home fans booing at the end of the game and manager wants the squad to produce something to reward the faith he, first team coach Jon McCarthy and the fans have put in them.

He said: "We've brought another 2,500 people through the gates and I'd be venting my anger as well I think because it's not good enough.

"Halifax have had a good start, they are a strong side but the team at the minute is nowhere near reflecting what I want.

"Me and Jon will work with them as much as we can but we need a lift ourselves and that's what they do on the park.

"It's very frustrating for the supporters and we need a lift as well from their performances."

Chester head to Kidderminster Harriers on Monday (3pm) and Burr confirmed he was unable to add to his squad at present, despite wanting to.

He said: "There's nothing available in the budget to bring anybody in at the minute so that's where we're at."
