Steve Burr was impressed with the Blues performance in the 1-1 draw with Tranmere Rovers on Wednesday.

His side were under the pump up until the 20-minute mark when a slight tactical switch allowed John Rooney to take charge.

Rovers had gone ahead on 14 minutes through Elliot Richards following a gaffe from keeper Jon Worsop but the Blues had the better possession in the first half.

On-trial Tranmere keeper Aaron Jameson made a string of excellent saves but could not prevent defender Antoine Boland putting through his own net seconds before half time.

Burr's side continued to create more in the second period and although the League Two club hit the post late on, defeat would have been harsh on the hosts.

"I thought it was a good game," said Burr after the match.

"I said to the lads at the end of the game that had that been a league match we'd have come off disappointed because I thought with the number of chances we created we'd have been a bit disappointed that we didn't win the game."

Rovers boss Rob Edwards fielded an experimental side but did include ex-Wales international Jason Koumas, who started well before the tireless Kingsley James got him under control.

Performances are more important than results in pre-season so Burr had double-reason to be pleased with this run out.

He said: "It was pleasing that we got 90 minutes into quite a few players and I thought they all did reasonably well against a good Tranmere side

"I thought they knocked it about well, Koumas showed his class and we're not going to come up against players like him every week.

"All in all I was pleased. The young lads did well and it's another game under their belts."
