Chester FC have moved quickly to find new friendly opponents after Wednesday's planned clash with a Bolton Wanderers XI was cancelled by the Trotters.

The Blues will take on Andy Preece's Welsh Premier League side at the Lookers Vauxhall Stadium on Wednesday night (7.45pm) after Bolton informed the Chester on Friday that they would not be fulfilling the fixture, with no reason being provided.

Preece's Wingmakers, who were edged out 3-2 at home to League Two Colchester United last week, will now step into the void as Chester look to get themselves sharp ahead of their National League opener on Saturday, August 6 at Gateshead.

A statement on Bolton's website read: "The club can confirm that Bolton Wanderers XI’s pre-season friendly against Chester FC has been cancelled.

"Originally scheduled for Wednesday 20 July at the Lookers Vauxhall Stadium, this fixture will no longer take place."

It is the second time that Chester boss Jon McCarthy has had to make last-minute changes to his pre-season schedule following Port Vale's decision last week to abandon plans to face the Blues on Saturday, July 30, in favour of facing a Manchester United XI at Vale Park.

New Vale boss Bruno Ribeiro is a childhood friend of United boss Jose Mourinho, with the two growing up in the same Portuguese city of Setubal.

Chester have managed to fill that particular weekend with a home friendly against Championship side Burton Albion.

Blues fans will recognise a number of faces in the Wingmakers squad on Wednesday, with former Chester players Ashley Williams, Tony Gray and Matty McGinn all part of Preece's squad.
