CHESTER FC’s goal of the season so far? Where do you start?

From Ben Mills finishing off a wonderfully flowing team move at home to Workington in August to Matty McGinn’s 30-yard free kick at Colwyn Bay last weekend, Blues fans have been treated to some truly stunning strikes.

But there is not one player who has contributed more to the canon than Antoni Sarcevic.

The 21-year-old’s efforts at home to FC Halifax Town, Harrogate Town and Droylsden will live long in the memory, as will his winner at Bishop’s Stortford.

But even Sarcevic will go some way to topping the goal that rounded off Saturday’s 5-1 victory over the Bay.

Picking up possession just outside his own box, there was little to suggest what was to happen next.

Using his power and pace to leave his first marker for dead, Sarcevic then skipped past the second.

With the pitch now in front of him, the former Crewe Alexandra midfielder kept going and going until he ended a lung-busting 90-yard dash down the Bay’s right flank with a shot that was curled to perfection into the top corner.

“My first thoughts was get past the man nearest to me and when I skipped past the next one I had all that space in front just to go into,” remembers Sarcevic.

“I heard Iain Howard shouting ‘cross it, cross it’, but if you think I’m running 90 yards and ending up crossing it, then no chance!

“It was nice to see it go in and it’s definitely up there with my best.”

The breathtaking solo goal was Sarcevic’s 16th of the season but his first in the Blue Square Bet North since January 12.

Before the Bay game Blues boss Neil Young had asked Sarcevic where his shooting boots had gone.

“We’ve had a bit of a laugh about it but I was a bit shocked when he said it,” joked the Mancunian.

“So just to prove him wrong with a goal like that was nice.”

Rising star Sarcevic, who signed a new two-year deal with the club before Christmas, is expected to feature in the trip Gainsborough Trinity tonight (7.45pm) and the visit of Boston United to the Exacta Stadium on Saturday (3pm).

Boston, of course, are the only team to have beaten the Blues in the league this season.

Sarcevic said: “That was one of those days were you look back and think what happened there?

“To be fair to them they played well but we were not at it all day.

“We’ll be looking to put it right on Saturday.”
